In case you want your audience to be happy, get your SEO strategies set.

What you need to know to get your website optimized for search engines.

Now that you need SEO do you know places on your website you should attack to get your website search engine friendly? Here are the major factors to focus on

 1. Website speed.

The speed at which your website greatly affects your website ranking and user experience. A website that takes ages to load will be sent below to the dark side. It’s not literally ages but mere 5 seconds and above of loading speed greatly affect your website.

Apart from just looking at how long the website takes to load, there are many tools that you can use to test the speed of your website. Gt-Metrix and a tool from Google itself Page Speed  Insights are some of the tools I use to test the speed of my websites.

Speeding up your website will get your website search engine friendly leading to ranking and probably getting to the top.

2. Relevancy.

Search engines try to find relevancy in the content you publish. Where it’s an answer, review, or specific topics, the search engine algorithms will be looking at how relevant your content is towards that topic.

Relevancy will get you to the top and will get you organic traffic.

Sticking to the topic, providing the required information, and answering more relevant questions to that particular topic is a sure way of getting your content optimized for search engines.

For the whole website, relevancy comes in when you are providing services or information your website is meant to. For example, if you have a website about pets, providing information or services about growing spices is relevant.

Trashing irrelevant services, and information from your website and leaving only relevant information to your niche is an SEO optimization strategy that will get you on the top.

3. Quality of content.

The quality of content you publish is a great ranking factor for search engines. Quality is defined by many things and not just a single factor can get your content ranked as quality content.

Useful articles, videos, images or other types of media that are well produced and laid out get you a point.

Writing for actual human beings rather than search engines will bring out great content. The use of software or bots to produce content can send you below the decks of search engines. Yes, the use of article re-writers or bots to create content is one way to make search engines hate you.

Content that is written by a real human, with great layouts and media is quality content that will get your website and content optimized for search engines.

4. User experience.

A lot of factors determine the user experience. How satisfied a visitor to your website is.

Things from the colors used on the website, loading, fonts, overall website layout, and placement of ads.  A lot of flickering ads, popups, bad fonts, small or extremely huge media content can ruin the user experience.

To get your website optimized for search engines, you should use white space (proper spacing), optimize page speed, use attractive call to actions, don’t be pushy in an annoying way with your call to actions, use images wisely and place them wisely, have a responsive design on all devices and don’t have broken links on your website.

5. Expertise, Authority, and Trust.

Expertise, authority, and trust, or simply E.A.T are the 3 factors search engines most especially Google uses to rank websites. Search engines always want to give the audience quality and trusted information or content that’s why you should aim at improving these 3 factors.

For Expertise, offering a service or content you have deep knowledge about can help you increase your rankings.

Authoritiviness is a measure of how your site stands apart from others. Expertise and trust can help increase authoritativeness, the reason you find big brand websites ranking much faster on articles is usually because of authoritativeness because they have proved themselves.

Trustworthiness is created with the production of quality content, quality backlinks, consistency, and deliverance of quality services. A trusted website usually gets ranked much faster in search engines.

The 3 factors of E.A.T usually go hand in hand with one helping you build the other.

Use E.A.T to optimize your website for search engines so that you can rank much faster and appear in searches.

6. Domain names.

Domain names can have an impact on your visibility and ranking in search engines. Although the ranking of a website depends on a lot of factors, the domain name is among.

Top-level domains will rank higher than free domains or domains provided by platforms such as WordPress or Blogspot. How many times have you seen a website ending with BlogSpot in your search results? It’s never or on very rare occasions. That says it all, you never see low-level domain websites in search results.

Therefore, to get your website optimized for search engines, get a top-level domain. If you are having a hard time getting a domain name, read this article: How to choose the best domain name.

Simply to choose a domain that will get your website optimized for search engines, choose one with one or more keywords that represent your site, a .com domain name is better than .blog. , .site and many other domain extensions, keep it short and avoid the use of hyphens.

7. Keyword research.

Have you been told to produce content with a keyword behind it? Keywords are the phrases in your content that will make it possible for search engines to find your content or your website.

Getting the right keywords to rank for will get your site or content found much easier in searches.  Have you realized that you always get relevant information when you search for a topic using a phrase or term? Those are the keywords the article you get are ranking for.

There are a lot of software and tools that you can use to find the right keywords for your content or website. From these tools, you can find the search volume and competition your content is likely to face.

This helps in choosing the right keywords to rank for and your target audience.

8. Quality backlinks.

Although backlinks don’t affect SEO that much, it’s a ranking factor at some point, and having quality links behind your website can help with visibility in search engines as it builds E.A.T.

But this doesn’t mean that you should go link building to the extent of purchasing links from websites that sell backlinks. The practice may backfire if you get links from untrustworthy or low-quality websites.

To get your website optimized for search engines, it is better to earn links organically. Organic backlinks help optimize search engine visibility.

9. Important pages.

You should know that for a website to appear trusty worthy and legit is should have important pages such as the about page, contact page, and terms of services.

These are pages search engines also look for in order to get information for E.A.T too. the about page defines who is behind the page, having this page demonstrates transparency and answers questions to people who may want to know thus building trust.

The contact page helps display contact information from which your website visitors can reach you. Get these pages to optimize your website for search engines.

Having such pages those pages increase E.A.T and overall page SEO.

10. Submit a sitemap.

A sitemap is a file that provides information about all the pages, media, and other files on your website and the relationship between them.

Submitting this kind of file in form of a code can help search engines find and crawl your website much faster with ease. The sitemap makes it easier for search engines to understand and index your content.

A sitemap can be built using an online sitemap generator, a tool provided by website platforms such as Yoast can submit a sitemap for you and you also have the option of building it manually.

Meta description.

A meta description is an attribute that describes a page or content. Simply, it is a few sentences that you set to appear under your title on the search page.

For example, when somebody searches for SEO and a lot of searches come on the page, you would want to set a few lines from your article under the title to lure someone into reading your article.

This text may also win you a featured snippet spot on search engines the first page for example Google. When not set, search engines usually pull a snippet of text from your article instead.

Therefore, you shouldn’t worry much about meta description but if you want a specific snippet to show under your searches, then it is better to set it.

11. SSL certificate.

Secure sockets layer or simply SSL certificates ensure that sensitive data from your website’s visitors is transferred over a secure network.

Let me make you understand more about SSL certificates. From a non-tech perspective, an SSL certificate is the small padlock-like icon before the URL in the search bar of your browser.

Usually, some browsers may also display the word ‘secure’ before the URL and not secure on websites with no SSL certificates.  Additionally, websites with SSL certificates will show HTTPS while those without will remain HTTP.

In the efforts of making the internet safe for its users, search engines are favoring websites with SSL certificates. Therefore, to be on the safe side, get the SSL certificate so that search engines can trust you with the visitor’s sensitive data.

12. Headings.

Never underestimate the power of headings in your content. Headings play a major role in improving user experience, provide structure to your website and they are loved by search engines. They help users and search engines to understand your content.

According to Yoast; ”they act as signposts for the readers and make it easier for them to figure out what a post or page is about. Headings also define which parts of your content are important, and show how they’re interconnected.

Use headings to improve your SEO by giving users directions to what they are looking for. If a user doesn’t find a heading to a section he is looking for, he may leave and go to another site that will provide answers. This increases your bounce rate and higher bounce rate is interpreted by search engines that your content doesn’t offer answers to use. Search engines will then push your content below the decks.

That’s how important headings are and therefore if you want your website to be loved by search engines, never miss out on your headings.

For WordPress users, there are 6 different types of headings from H1 (biggest) to H6 (smallest). Therefore, structure your website headings around these headings. To learn more about structuring your headings for SEO, read a post from Yoast about headings here.

13. Cross-device compatibility.

Cross-device compatibility means that your website works properly on all the major devices from small to very big. It means that from a phone your website will appear properly as well as on large screens.

This helps to improve user experience making your website loved by search engines.

Another compatibility your website should have is cross-browser compatibility which simply means that your website works on all the major browsers with ease without breaking, hiding information, or displaying content that is all scrambled up.

With cross-browser compatibility, your website should display properly on Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Opera.

These days website hosting platforms such as WordPress, Wix, and others provide this feature but if your website was built a decade ago and its struggles to display properly on all devices, that is hurting your SEO.

It is therefore recommended to choose platforms, websites, and page builders that offer cross-device compatibility.

14. Internal linking.

An internal link is any link from one page to another page on your website. It is used to refer to other useful information your audience may find useful.

This interconnection between pages shows search engines that these pages are useful with great information. If a post gets a lot of internal linking directing towards it, this acts as a signal to the search engine that is an important page.

A piece of content with no internal link to it is regarded as a less important page on your website and search engines will not display it in search results.

You should therefore link to other pages or articles on your website. It should be done wisely though as too much or irrelevant linking will just hurt your SEO instead.

15. Images.

Images are important aspects of an article as they bring life and provide more information in the article.

When used correctly, they help users understand the article better.

The best practice is using original images (that you have taken yourself) over stock images. The images should also be relevant to the topic in the article or else it will be as useless as if not put in the article.

If you don’t have original images, dot get copyright images still. There are many websites such as PixabayUnsplash, and others that offer free stock images. You can also purchase a subscription to premium images that will portray the information in your article.

The right sizes of images in your article also should be put into consideration. On all our websites, we use 818 x 418 pixels for the featured image and 1200 x 853 pixels for images within the content.

Another great factor is the image size. Huge images over 1MB will increase the loading speed of your website and thus hurting the SEO in the process. We use Canva to create light images yet with great resolutions. These types of images load faster and appear great on all devices.

16. Schema markup

According to Neil Patel; ”Schema markup is code (semantic vocabulary) that you put on your website to help the search engines return more informative results for users. If you’ve ever used rich snippets, you’ll understand exactly what schema markup is all about.

What the schema markup does is tell search engines what your data means so that it can display it relevantly. It is usually used by organizations or companies to help google understand the location information, open time, reviews, and events. All that information appearing in a snippet can help a lot with user experience thus improving the SEO.

Schema markup is helpful on websites about people, products, recipes, review ratings, music, and videos. Using them on such websites helps display more important information on the SERPs which increases the click-through rates.

When a website has schema markup, users can see what the website is all about in the SERPS. It can help you specify the category of your website and the type of content it produces. Schema markup also turns your search results into attractive results with star ratings, customer ratingstype of content, images, and other useful information.

What might ruin your SEO?

Some practices you do on your website might be the reason why your website is never ranking in search engines. These are practices you sometimes do thinking that they are helping yet doing the opposite.  Read on to see SEO ruining practices.

  • Keyword stuffing.

Keyword stuffing is stuffing a webpage with the same search target in hopes of ranking higher in search engines.

No matter how much keywords are important in an article, putting a lot of them can be a disaster for your website. In the old days, people would put a lot of keywords in their articles and rank. But as search engines are getting wiser, they punish for this act.

The act may be in the form of an unnecessary repeating of the search term, adding words that are out of the context, inserting blocks of the same keyword, and the use of keywords that aren’t relevant to the topic of the page.

First of all, keyword stuffing creates an awful experience for the users and this will hurt your SEO in many ways. Search engines also don’t enjoy it and the activity could lead to a search penalty where your article no longer appears in search results.

  • Bad ad usage or placement can hurt your SEO.

Here is Google’s say on ads “We’ve heard complaints from users that if they click on a result and it’s difficult to find the actual content, they aren’t happy with the experience. Rather than scrolling down the page past a slew of ads, users want to see content right away.

So sites that don’t have much content “above-the-fold” can be affected by this change. If you click on a website and the part of the website you see first either doesn’t have a lot of visible content above-the-fold or dedicates a large fraction of the site’s initial screen real estate to ads, that’s not a very good user experience.”

It doesn’t mean that Google hates ads but rather their placement and quantity on your website must be friendly to users.

Too many ads, forced ad placements, forced pop-ups, autoplay videos and audio, misleading ads and forced click on ads may ruin your SEO.

With ad placement, be strategic on the placement and place ads in areas that don’t distract your audience. Have fewer ads on your website, although you will not earn a lot, users will enjoy your website and so will search engines.

Choose search engine verified ads providers such as Google AdSense, Eozoic, Mediavine, and AdThrive. These will do most of the work for you and they follow the best ad placements and display.

  • Duplicate content.

Do you really expect search engines to rank the same content that is already existing on another website? Search engines hate duplicate content and will not bother getting it on the rank sheet.

The act is called plagiarism and content made in this way surely never ranks. Don’t risk, aim at creating new and unique content. I understand you may not be able to invent unique content but when you are to copy someone’s work, at least use your own words or else linkback and indicate that it’s not your content but rater from a different website.

If you are keen, you will realize that I have also linked to other websites, used their pieces of content but i linked back to them and indicated.

  • Use of bots and hacking software.

You will find software that simplifies almost any task concerning the website and content creation. While some are good, others just ruin your SEO.

For example, article rewrites, bot traffic generators, and many other scripts or software. You should be selective about the type of software that you use.

Use only certified and software that are recommended by WordPress, Wix, Shopify, or other known platforms.
